“In my country, lack of rain literally means hunger and death for the underprivileged”. Vanessa Nakate, 23 yrs old, climate activist from Uganda.

In January 2019, concerned about the rise in temperature in her country and its serious consequences, she began a solitary strike against inaction on the climate crisis. For several months she was the lone protester outside of the gates of the Parliament of Uganda. Eventually, other youth responded to her calls on social media for others to help draw attention to the plight of the rainforests.

Vanessa’s own experience of being cropped out of a photo of young women activists at the World Economic Forum strengthened her resolve to promote the voices of African women activists. She is the founder of the Fridays for Future movement, Rise Up Movement and Youth for Future Africa.

Preocupada por el aumento de la temperatura en Uganda y sus graves consecuencias, comenzó una huelga contra la inacción en la crisis climática en enero de 2019. Durante varios meses fue la única manifestante fuera de las puertas del Parlamento de Uganda. Finalmente, otros jóvenes respondieron a sus llamadas en las redes sociales para que le ayudaran a llamar la atención sobre la situación de las selvas tropicales.

Vanessa fue recortada de una foto de jóvenes activistas en el Foro Económico Mundial. Esto fortaleció su determinación de promover las voces de activistas africanas. Es fundadora del movimiento Fridays for Future, Rise Up Movement y Youth for Future Africa.
